How to Listen to Apple Music in Dolby Atmos and Lossless Quality on iOS and macOS
Apple Music now supports Lossless audio formats and Dolby Atmos at no extra charge. This allows subscribers to enjoy these enhanced audio experiences without any additional cost. Following Apple’s lead, other services like Amazon Music have also stopped charging extra for accessing Lossless audio. Whether you have an iPhone 14 or a Mac Studio, the process to enable these features is simple. Here’s how:
On iOS:
- Open Settings:
- Head to the Settings app.
- Navigate to Music:
- Scroll down to find the Music section and enter it.
- Enable Dolby Atmos:
- Go to the Dolby Atmos section.
- Choose Automatic to play only Dolby Atmos songs in Spatial Audio, or Always On to also spatialize stereo songs.
- Enable Lossless Audio:
- Return to the previous Settings page and go to the Audio Quality section.
- Enable Lossless Audio.
- Select Audio Quality:
- Choose between High Efficiency (Cellular Streaming only), High Quality, Lossless, and High-Res Lossless for Cellular Streaming, Wi-Fi Streaming, and Downloads.
- Note: For High-Res Lossless, Apple warns that you need a digital-to-analog converter. If you don’t have one, stick to regular Lossless quality.
On macOS:
- Open the Music App:
- Launch the Music app from Launcher or Spotlight Search.
- Access Preferences:
- Click on Music in the menu bar and select Preferences.
- Adjust Playback Settings:
- Go to the Playback section.

- Select Audio Quality:
- Choose the desired audio quality for streaming and downloading.
- Set Dolby Atmos Preferences:
- Choose whether you want Dolby Atmos to work automatically or always.
- Save Settings:
- Hit the OK button to save your settings.
Identifying Dolby Atmos and Lossless Songs
Songs available in Dolby Atmos and Lossless quality will display respective icons, making it easy to identify them.
Apple’s decision to offer Dolby Atmos and Lossless audio formats at no additional cost is a welcome change, especially since many other services charge extra for higher audio quality. If you are on a limited data plan, you can always switch back to compressed versions of the audio tracks by following the same steps outlined above.
Enjoy your music in Spatial Audio and Lossless quality!
